The Catholic Church opposed scientific discoveries that it felt challenged its authority and power. Therefore, a lot of scientists were punished for disobeying the church. Galileo was one of them, and he was kept under house arrest. He was not discouraged though. It was under his house arrest that he published two of his books, and they are considered pretty important in the field of Physics.
